Once upon a time, in a town by the sea, something strange was about to happen.

The coastal hamlet of Seaglass Cove was usually defined by the rhythmic churning of the tide and the steady cry of gulls. But on this twilight, an unnatural hush fell over the harbor. The tide receded far past the usual low-water mark, exposing long-buried rock shelves and kelp beds that hadn't seen daylight in a century.

Nora, an apprentice to the local harbor master, walked down the damp slope with a lantern swinging in her hand. Glancing down at the exposed seabed, her light caught a metallic glint resting among the tide pools: an ancient, tarnished brass cylinder covered in fine, mechanical gears that seemed entirely out of place against the wet stone.

As she bent down to clear away the clingy seaweed, the device hummed to life with a faint, crystalline click. A small display along its side flickered, casting a faint blue light against her fingers as a cryptic sequence of numbers—1789138753168—began to glow across its surface. Moments later, a low, resonant pulse vibrated beneath her boots, rattling the distant windows of the town high above.
